Anna Maria

Location: Philippines General Hospital, Manila, Philippines

Anna Maria’s eyes light up when she speaks of her beloved students. A math teacher to 17 year olds, a volunteer pre-school teacher and a mother of two girls, she’s used to caring for others.  But when she started to get sick, she was the one who needed care.  It started with blood in her stools and unexplained weight loss.  The devastating diagnosis: colorectal cancer.  Anna needed surgery immediately.

Living in the Philippines, Ana and her husband Alexander are lucky to both have work. Together their combined monthly income is about $220.00 US.  With no insurance and no savings, they weren’t sure how they could possibly pay for Anna’s treatment.  But they borrowed what they could and the surgery went ahead.

After the surgery, Anna was scheduled to begin chemotherapy at the Philippines General Hospital.  Again they had no money.  Anna’s extended family stepped in to help.  One relative even sold his small business to help finance some of her treatment. All of her family chipped in every cent they could possibly spare.  But it just wasn’t enough.

Thankfully, Anna was about to receive a precious gift.  NCC had recently donated several important cancer chemotherapy drugs to the Philippines General Hospital for their underserved patients.  The preferred chemotherapy choice for Anna’s cancer, Irinotecan, was one of these life saving donations.  Now she can continue her chemotherapy and receive, at no charge, this crucial drug in her treatment protocol.

With your help, this is the difference NCC can make in people’s lives.  People who can barely afford to live… you help NCC give them the medical treatment they need.  Treatment that would be standard in the US is almost unobtainable for underserved people in developing countries like the Philippines.

The light in Anna’s eyes still shines brightly as she thanks NCC and our generous supporters for their precious donations.  She says, “Please continue to help the patients at the PGH. The government cannot help all these patients alone. We all need your help.”

Donate now and help someone like Anna receive the treatment they desperately need.
