Calista G.
Location: Lallie Kemp Medical Center, Independence, Louisiana, USA
For Calista G., nurturing comes very naturally; she has six children and twelve grandchildren, and she is a former worker in the childcare field. So, when she fell ill and became the one who needed care, it was hard for her to handle this role-reversal.
During a routine self-exam, Calista noticed a lump in her left breast. Her doctor confirmed her worst fears: Calista had breast cancer. After undergoing a double mastectomy, Calista needed eight months of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation treatments at Lallie Kemp Medical Center in Independence, Louisiana.
Calista’s emotional and physical pain was undeniable, but she remained in high spirits thanks to the incredible devotion of her family. But Calista’s inability to work and lack of health insurance weighed heavily upon her mind. She knew that the $1,200 a month of social security from her husband, age 70, was all that they had, and this certainly was not enough to provide for them and cover her necessary treatment. Calista’s strong faith, however, would not allow her to lose hope.
Thankfully, NCC Provides was there to help Calista with the financial support she needed to finish her treatments. NCC Provides works with medical centers such as Lallie Kemp to assist cancer patients with unmet needs. These might include: gas cards for travel, prescription help, lodging, nutritional supplements and other expenses related to their cancer treatments.
NCC established this essential program because without aid many patients are forced to cancel some of their treatments, or worse yet, discontinue their treatments altogether.
We are ecstatic to report that Calista is cancer-free and enjoying being the caregiver once again.
Donate now and help patients like Calista continue the treatment they need to get better.
Background Information
Since 2005, the National Cancer Coalition has worked with cancer hospitals and medical centers around the southern United States to provide financial assistance through its NCC Provides Program to patients in need suffering with cancer and other serious disease. Our staff works closely with social service representatives at these institutions to qualify appropriate patients to receive assistance through this program. By providing funds for such things as travel expenses, lodging, meals, laboratory/diagnostic testing, nutritional supplements, medicines, and insurance co-pays, NCC is helping patients with very necessary expenses, which might otherwise be an obstacle preventing them from completing their required treatment.
