Impact Report
Paul and his wife
Paul V.
Location: Slidell, Louisiana, USA
Paul is a New Orleans native, and like so many people living in the Gulf Coast area, he lost everything through the devastation of Hurricane Katrina: his house, his possessions, and his job. After living in a FEMA trailer for a year, his family pulled everything together and bought a home in Slidell, Louisiana, where Paul found work with a contractor. Just as Paul and his family were finally beginning to feel positive and hopeful about their new life outside of New Orleans, Paul became very sick.
Paul learned he had cancer – B-cell Lymphoma. He was told it was extremely aggressive, and that he would die if he did not have surgery very soon. Eventually referred to Lallie Kemp Medical Center in Independence, Louisiana, the doctors there recommended massive doses of chemotherapy rather than surgery.
The treatment seemed to be very successful, but then the cancer began to spread. Paul needed twelve more weeks of chemotherapy. But driving 60 miles back and forth to Lallie Kemp for treatment was getting very expensive.
Paul knew he was being given wonderful, expert care that would save his life, but he did not know how he could continue his treatments. His poor condition and constant need for care prevented both he and his wife from having a job. Paul was in a fight for his life, but unsure of how to keep it going.
Thankfully, NCC Provides was there to help Paul with the financial support he needed to finish his treatments. NCC Provides works with medical centers such as Lallie Kemp to assist cancer patients with unmet needs. These might include: gas cards for travel, prescription help, lodging, nutritional supplements and other expenses related to their cancer treatments.
NCC established this essential program because without aid many patients are forced to cancel some of their treatments, or worse yet, discontinue their treatments altogether.
Thankfully, Paul was able to continue his life-saving treatments. He is now cancer free and excited about his future.
